In the scope of the research on materials that could meet the producers’ expectations for reliable stoppers for wine bottles, some products alternative to cork stoppers have been introduced on the market. The commercial trend pushing towards stoppers of that type came from the chains of foreign great distribution: as a matter of fact at the beginning of the 90s some English stores imposed their supplier the use of synthetic stoppers to avoid defects linked to corked savour, which the consumer could perceive as due to the scarce quality of the wine. All that favoured the development of the main production industries of plastic stoppers that found a wide application mainly on the USA and Australian markets and in the new wine countries, distant from the cork growing areas, such as Australia, California, Argentina, Chile, and New Zealand. In Europe synthetic stoppers spread more slowly: the countries with a deeply-rooted wine tradition gave them quite a chilly welcome due to the insufficient confidence in closures differing from traditional corks...
